I am a college student and have my own vehicle, should I get insurance in the state I live in which is in New Orleans Louisiana or the state I attend college in?

If you are a Louisiana resident but going to school in Texas keeping your current car insurance may be a problem, depending on your insurance carrier. If the insurer is licensed to do business in Texas then you should be able to stay with that insurance provider but according to the Louisiana Insurance Commissioner it would be up to the guidelines of your individual insurance company if they would continue your policy or drop you so that you would get TX insurance.

So to decide which state to register and insure you vehicle, first try speaking to your current insurance broker to verify if your policy will follow you. If it will not follow you then you will need to obtain insurance in the state where your college is located.
