Q: I pay too much on my premium every month and need a way to get cheap SR22 auto insurance. I’m a good driver, only I tend to get pulled over for things such as expired inspection stickers and would never have insurance coverage.

A: You present an interesting case that speaks to the fact that no matter how well you drive, not getting proper car insurance coverage can leave you stranded and even looking for cheap SR22 auto insurance.

One thing that I would suggest to you is to raise your deductible. I raised my own deductible from $500 to $2000, and saved $200 a month on my car insurance, which was around 50%. You only have to pay your deductible if you file a claim on your comprehensive coverage or if you get into a crash for which you are at fault, so as a good driver you don’t have too much to worry about. Put some of the money you save from raising your deductible aside so that when the time comes, you’ll be able to pay it.

Q: I’m a student at Tulane University in Louisiana who ran into some trouble over Thanksgiving holidays, and now I have to file proof of insurance. Is there some way for me to get cheap SR22 insurance as a young driver?

A: Being young driver is risk enough without adding on the stigma of having had your license suspended, but while the payments might not get back to their usual state for awhile, you don’t need to worry about saving money, because it is possible.

First of all, take a look at your grades. If you’re under 25 years old and you have a B average in your classes, then you can use this with most companies to get as much as a 15% discount on your cheap SR22 policy. Some companies will vary the requirements, but one consistent thing is that you must be a student full time at your school in order to qualify. For some, the age limit is 21 and unmarried.

SR22 for non owner

Q: If I have SR22 for non owner insurance and I get into an accident in a friend’s car who also has insurance, whose coverage will kick in first?

A: Well, the point behind SR22 for non owner insurance is not to double up insurance when a vehicle is already insured, but to nor give the benefit of the doubt to a driver who has already had their license suspended, which is why you must have your SR22 for non owner insurance.

That is to say, when you are driving in an insured car, your SR22 for non owner insurance is pretty much just back up. If you get into an accident, your friend’s coverage will kick in first because car insurance follows the car in most cases, not the driver. Once your friend’s liability runs out, your own will continue.

Non owner SR22

Q: How do I get non owner SR22 car insurance and what is it?

A: Most car insurance companies which sell regular SR22 car insurance will also sell a non owner SR22, since the risk in this case is essentially the same. You may, like other SR22 buyers, be forced to seek coverage among high risk providers and the Louisiana assigned risk pool.

Non owner SR22 insurance is a policy specifically tailored to cover someone who does not own there own car, but still drives one in someone else’s name. If you intend to do any driving at all after your license is suspended and you don’t own a car, you will need non owner SR22.

One of the downsides of non owner SR22 car insurance is that you are only able to get minimum liability insurance and even that costs more than most. Hopefully if you get into an accident, the car owner will have fuller coverage.

SR22 bond

Q: How long do I have to retain my SR22 bond?

A: This will depend on the state it was originally required of you in. Since we’re in Louisiana, I’m going to assume the default, but if you’ve moved here from another state with an existing SR22 bond requirement, the answer may be different.

In Louisiana, you are required to maintain your SR22 bond insurance for three years from the date of your license suspension if you want to have your license reinstated. If you choose not to drive during those three years, then you won’t have to pay for any SR22 bond insurance. Even though you are only required to maintain your SR22 bond for three years, though, it wil continue to affect your record and could cause higher prices for as much as five years.

SR22 insurance quote

Q: Where can I get an SR22 insurance quote?

A: There are two ways you can get an SR22 insurance quote: the traditional way or the modern way. The traditional way involves a time consuming phone book hunt, long talks with car insurance agents, office visits, daunting forms, and frustrating disappointment.

The modern way, however, is to get your SR22 insurance quote from an online car insurance quote website. Many of these websites combine five to ten quotes into one form, so you get ten times the results in the same fifteen minutes. While some do still require a phone call from an agent, most places offer instant quotes online, making comparison shopping a piece of cake.

Q: I have a lot of bills, and it’s really a strain to keep up with all. I don’t like having payents drafted from my bank account, but is there any other way to make my SR22 car insurance premium more manageable?

A: Most car insurance companies have several payment options that are besides drafting, so you might want to talk to your company first. There is also a benefit in paying your six month premium all at once, which not only saves you the headache but also saves you around $50.

However, another way to manage your SR22 car insurance and save money at the same time is to combine your insurance coverages. This is called the multi line discount, and you can only get it from a company that offers other types of insurance alongside car insurance. If you combine your home owners or renters insurance with your life insurance and your car insurance, not only will you be able to deal with them all at once, but you can get a 5-15% discount as well.

Q: Why is cheap SR22 insurance so hard to find?

A: Cheap SR22 insurance is hard to find because, car insurance companies, being businesses, are looking to suffer the least loss, and so in order to consent to insuring someone who is far more likely than your average Joe to cost them money, they must make you pay a significant price more. This is because all car insurance premium money goes into a pool to be used by all, so it makes sense that those who are more likely to pull money out be the ones to put more money in.

Just because cheap SR22 insurance is rare, though, does not mean that you can’t lower your premium, even with SR22. By looking into discounts and other savings options, you can lower your premium by as much as 70% with some companies.

SR22 form

Q: I need to file an SR22 form with my insurance coverage in order to get my Louisiana driver’s license back, but I can’t find any company to do this. What do I do?

A: You will need to narrow your search. Since you now carry higher risk, you’re going to be rejected a lot more than you’re used to, and in order to do that you need to move to a different arena. Instead of patronizing (or trying to) regular car insurance companies, find companies which specialize in high risk policies such as sports cars or the SR22 form filing.

If you fail to find someone to file an SR22 form with your policy even there, then your next move should be to contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance looking for information about their assigned risk car insurance pool. You’ll be guaranteed coverage through the pool, although it will cost an arm and a leg.

Q: Where can I buy SR22 auto insurance coverage?

A: Your first step in looking for a company to provide you with SR22 auto insurance is to narrow your search down to car insurance companies which are licensed by the Louisiana Department of Insurance to sell policies in your state. Even if you pay for a policy every month, you will still be at risk of license suspension if the company does not have a place selling insurance where you live.

Your next step would be to find a company willing to take on the risk of an SR22 auto insurance carrying customer. SR22 auto insurance is higher risk because of your past driving abuses, so you may have to look harder than usual to come up with a company to sell it to you.
